parks & rec + the french kicks
was pretty excited last night when i saw parks and rec (one of my favorite shows) give some (subtle) love to the french kicks (one of my favorite bands). love it when my worlds collide. that red and blue poster pinned up inside the bar is the promo/cover art for the band's last album, which is one of my favorite albums of all time.

gaslight anthem : american slang
you can (and definitely should) stream the title track from the band's forthcoming full-length over at their myspace. they seem to be getting a bit more noise out of their instruments on this one, which is a really good thing.

stream mgmt's "congratulations" in its entirety
and i do recommend in its entirety. start to finish. that's how the band wanted you to do it, and i think the album benefits from doing it that way. also, be warned that the band followed through with its promise/threat: no big singles/hooks (i.e. no "kids" or "electric feel" or "time to pretend").
florence + the machine : dog days are over (video)
so, before i show this pretty odd/awesome video for this totally incredible song by the insanely amazing florence + the machine, can we talk about how this song has all of a sudden become the go to soundtrack song for any melodramatic moments in any tv show/film involving a female lead? like, i realize (and think it's awesome) that a legit female musician is making legit tunes that are (i'm guessing) really empowering to women and speak to them in a way that maybe i can't understand. and i think that's great. but it's being played out. too many shows. i've heard it on at least four separate tv shows plus the new julia roberts flick. too many contrived scenes lacking any real emotional content. it's turning the song into a caricature of itself. makes me feel :(

makin a comeback, but nervous for when they start showing up at urban outfitters.
on this whitest of holidays, it's nice to find an opportunity acknowledge some of the (seedy) greatness of those darker/greasier europeans. i'll be the first to acknowledge that the greeks peaked real early, but every now and then, they manage to produce a couple of badasses. like this fella.

new idiot glee
i think that this guy has a strong chance of making a really special album some day. he seems to be able to jump from sound to sound while maintaining a very specific feeling in a way that doesn't feel in the least bit forced. anxious to see what this guy makes of himself.
