on the superb owl halftime show
what did you guys/girls think? don't get me wrong, madonna's the queen. i love madonna singles as much as (probably more than) the next straight guy in his late 20s. but what were we watching? a woman NOT singing songs that she technically did NOT write while half-dancing to something she did NOT choreograph? feels kind of like we just watched a moderately attractive 54 year-old stand on stage for 12 minutes. don't we deserve something more? not to say i expect to see arcade fire or phoenix up there anytime soon. i mean, i realize that probably the single most important factor in picking the half-time act is name and song recognition across all demographics. and madonna's singles are certainly that ubiquitous. but it still doesn't change the fact that what we watched took less skill than a two song run on karaoke night. that if you took some polyjuice potion and were able to look (only physically) exactly like madonna, after two days of dance rehearsal you could have gone on stage in her place and nobody in the world would have been able to tell that they weren't watching the real madonna perform. that sucks for us. and i realize the pool of viable candidates is dwindling, that we don't produce arena acts like we used to, but are we really down to this? if we want to continue with the aging musician theme, we've still got people like fogerty and petty and nicks left. skewing slightly younger, what about kanye and jay-z? beyonce? coldplay? pearl jam? dave matthews? daft punk? hell, i'd even settle for newbies like taylor swift or (barf) bieber. i'm not talking about artistic integrity here (although that would be nice). i just want to see someone PERFORM at the half-time performance.
big easy express (trailer)
mumford and sons, edward sharpe and old crow medicine show took an old train and toured with it. the doc looks really cool. i also wonder the carbon footprint of touring this way compared to the normal van/trailer/truck style...
