you can stream the new one from arctic monkeys over at the band's website. lots of people seemed to find the band's last album, humbug, to be an uncomfortable departure. personally, it was my favorite. to my ears, suck it and see feels like the big departure. give it a listen and let me know what you think.

listen at npr. probably their best since transatlanticism.
the first taste of the horrors third lp, skying, comes in the form of "still life." the horrors have done quite the about face since their first album, and it is suiting them extremely well. stereogum hears traces of tears for fears and psychedelic furs. give a listen.

really great dark dance jam from pictureplane's new album, thee physical, coming out 7.19. it's not dark like "scary" dark. but maybe more like just being in the dark. and dancing. dancing in the dark.

i've posted on australian folkies middle east before, but back then they had only released a little ep and didn't seem like they were planning on releasing much more. well, they are. their first proper full-length comes out july 12, and you can download a song from the new album below.

i have really been enjoying this non-musical site i just found called the burning house. the premise behind each and every post lies in this fairly straightforward question: if your house was burning, what would you bring with you? it's interesting to see some of the answers and even more interesting to think about how you yourself would answer that question.
which is great news. beirut's last album, while good, was thoroughly unfulfilling for some reason. it just felt like it was a few fully-fledged songs and a lot of half-thought out ideas thrown together and released because it was "time" for him to release an album. anywho, i'm real excited about this one. read a little bit more about it here.
ted leo, one of the hardest working and most respected musicians in the indie-sphere, will be doing a solo show at jack white's third man records store/venue/whatever that will be recorded live. leo usually does some great covers when he plays solo (the boss, kelly clarkson, split enz, etc.) so expect this to be a vinyl worth buying. more info here.

for those chicagoans unfamiliar, new music mondays are a series of free concerts at chicago's millenium park, and they're pretty fun. i've seen dirty projectors and she & him there, and both were great. this summer's lineup has been announced, and there are more than a few acts worth checking out, including iron and wine, ted leo, and bonnie "prince" billie. grab some bread, cheese, a bottle of red wine, a blanket and a lover, stretch out on the lawn and enjoy the show. and watch out for hipsters. they're everywhere.
