Passion Pit Gets Children's Choir For Debut Album

If you're an itunes user, you can grab the Fader TV podcast for free and check out the excellent in-studio video of Michael Angelakos (singer/songwriter) of Passion Pit as he utilizes a New York City children's choir for songs that will appear on the band's debut full-length. It sounds pretty promising, which is a relief because my expectations for this album are pretty high (I consider "Sleepyhead" to be one of the best songs of 2008).

P.S. While you're checking out the Fader TV podcast, you can also grab an interesting interview with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver conducted in a massage parlor during a massage.

"Mary and Max" Trailer

Favorite line: "babies are laid by Catholic nuns...if you're an atheist, they're laid by dirty lonely prostitutes."

p.s. that's Philip Seymour Hoffman's voice.

Grizzly Bear's New Joint To Drop In May

So they say.

New Sufjan Stevens: "You Are The Blood"

Set to appear on the (for a great cause) Dark Was The Night compilation. LISTEN HERE. Really cool and really creepy, but pretty long (10+ minutes), so stick with it.
The Strokes have started writing their fourth album.

New Calvin Harris: "I'm Not Alone"

This song is the jam.

Speaking Of Award Show Performances...

...Radiohead to perform at the Grammys along with Coldplay, Lil Wayne, Keny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, the Jonas Brothers, and Katy Perry. Hmmm...that list started off strong, but for me it started to lose a bit of luster as it progressed. Go home, Katy Perry.

The Oscars Approacheth...

As the Oscars approach, I find myself about as interested as I ever am, which is to say not entirely interested or disinterested. Just sort of "meh," as the kids say. I think part of it has to do with the rubes that are in those voting booths. The same rubes that chose cheesiness of the most grandiose scale and gave it an award...

...over this.

Only Michael Scott was happy about that one.

Soft Black

Snagged this one off of Ear Farm's list of top ten Brooklyn bands to listen to right now. The song is "I Am An Animal" and it is from Soft Black's forthcoming The Earth Is Black..., which was allegedly inspired by/based on a series of nightmares that were continually plaguing singer/songwriter Vincent Cacchione. This particular jam is sort of in the same vein as the Ladyhawk song I posted earlier: simple, straightforward rock.

New (Live) Arctic Monkey Songs

If y'all out there are like me, you're anxiously awaiting the next album from Alex Turner and Co. If you head over to PMA, you can hear some live versions of a couple of new jams ("Crying Lightning" really picks up by the end).

Paramore To Tour w/ No Doubt

Actually sounds like it would be a pretty sweet show.

New El Guincho: "Bombay"

I didn't love all of Alegranza, but when the songs were good, they were great. This seems like one of the good ones.

"Visitors." Not as great as anything on the two EPs, but I'm sure things will pick up. Full-length on the way.

Village Voice Dissects Vampire Weekend And The Current/Inevitable Backlash

Really quite an interesting read, especially for fans of the band, as there is clearly a slight bias. READ IT HERE.

More From "Dark Was The Night" --> Yeasayer's "Tightrope"

Yeasayer's "Tightrope" was first introduced to most listeners via the band's extremely memorable Blogotheque performance. '08 Lollapaloozers might recognize it from their midday set. WillieBro, Cinnabear, and myself were reintroduced to it at their raucous Halloween show at Grinnell. This polished studio version is a little more restrained than previous versions, but still quite good. CHECK IT HERE

George Michael Bluth's a Jerk

I say just do the damn thing without him. If he wants to turn his back on the people and show that helped his rise to stardom, that's his decision.  I find him a little less appealing when he's being all snarky, acting like a lil' baby. Also, guy who is sitting next to Michael Cera, cool Ali G snaps.

Doves New Album Finally Finished

Four years after their fantastic third album Some Cities, Doves seem finally ready to drop some new tunes on us. According to a lil' fan electronic mail that has been sent out, the album, track order and everything, is all locked in and the band are (is?) aiming for an April release. I'll keep you posted. For those new to the band, check some of their tunes at the BAND'S MYSPACE.

Into The Airwaves

A one Mr. Whilden Hughes and I will be back on the radio, spinning the choicest, freshest and crunchiest jams y'all have ever heard. We're on from 1-3, Tuesday afternoons (that means TODAY). If you're not in the Iowa City area and don't get KRUI 89.7, you can stream it FROM HERE. Hollatchaboiz!

New Muscles Music: "Take Me With You"

The man that helped frozen dairy to save the day is back with some new music. I know that he's been working on the Guns Babes Lemonade followup for a bit now and has been plagued with some label issues, so I'm not entirely sure when the full-length will drop. Also not sure if THIS NEW SONG, or this version, will end up on the album...but let's hope that it does not.

Little lackluster for my taste.

'500 Days of Summer' Trailer

I like Zooey Deschanel from her music all the way to her acting (although I know some out there who enjoy her more than I do). Here's the trailer for her new flick, which debuted pretty strongly at Sundance.

Fleet Foxes On SNL

"Mykonos." The start is a little rough, as singer Robin Pecknold's vocals sound a bit off-key for the first verse/chorus and his guitar has a weird twang to it, but by the second verse all is well once again. The outro is particularly lovely.

"Blue Ridge Mountains." I love Pecknold's high water jeans. Classic Pecknold.
So that ridiculous Dark Was The Night compilation with all the ridiculous collaborations I was talking about earlier, well it seems that each day now they'll be streaming a new track from the album on THE MYSPACE. I'm not entirely sure when it started, but I do know that yesterday, it was the lovely Feist/Ben Gibbard collaboration that was on display. Today, its an unreleased Bon Iver song, "Brackett, WI" (not to be confused with For Emma's bonus track "Wisconsin"), and it is quite lovely as well.

EDIT: I guess they're doing one song a day for 31 days. This is day 4. Tomorrow is a Grizzly Bear song that floated around the blogs a bit. I believe it was originally just a Dan Rossen song and, from what I remember, it was quite beautiful. Tuesday's the National and Wednesday is Yeasayer. You can see the full 'schedule' HERE.

Red Bull Now Makes Cola

Thinking About the 'Lil Things'

I just took off my shirt, as I often do. Found a piece of belly lint, as I often do. Do y'all guys with chest hair ever wonder how belly lint really forms? Do y'all ever call it 'navel fluff'? Sometimes I wish I could see a time-lapse video of some 'fluff' being born, kinda like this time-lapse video of ants eating a gecko.

This dude and dudette get stoned then answer personal questions that are sent in. You can watch them HERE.

Prolly not suitable for work, so slip on those headphones.

Chubby Kid on a Rollercoaster

I don't know if y'all already seen this, because it is a little old, but I definitely LOL'd.

Emmy The Great

Stereogum's doing pretty well today. This is the video for the song "First Love." Kind of like a slightly more interesting Michelle Branch.

Bloc Party Add Some US Dates

New Beirut!! "La Llorona"

Sooooo happy. My five day weekend is just about to kick off and I couldn't think of a better way to start. Managed to not thoroughly embarrass myself while speaking in class AND a new Beirut song + video. The song is "La Llorona" (the weeping woman in English) and will appear on his March of the Zapotec EP which is due out next month. According to Stereogum, the song was inspired by "the legend about a woman who killed her children then herself after she was rejected by a man and now spends her time as a weeping ghost, wandering in search of the kids." Neat.

Jay-Z + Radiohead = Jaydiohead

Like Dangermouse's original Jigga mashup project minus the Beatles and probably the lawsuits.

Sample this song: Jaydiohead - No Karma

Interview with Bret and Jermaine from Flight of the Conchords can be found HERE.

Alela Diane "White As Diamonds" Video

Been a minor fan of Alela's ever since I heard the very aching and pretty "Pieces Of String." This is pretty pretty too.

Hype Machine users should definitely give THIS a spin.

Bikini Free EP + Feist Cover

Big fan of anything free. This duo that goes under the Bikini moniker sounds a bit like some sort of Passion Pit/Hellogoodbye hybrid with slightly mumbled lyrics minus the falsetto and vocoder. CLICK HERE if you're interested.

Take Off Your Sunglasses

KEXP podcast coming through once again because I'm digging this jangly little indie-rock tune. A simple little guitar and harmonica number that may not stay in your mind very long, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it while it does.

Led Zep to tour and record an album WITHOUT Robert Plant. Don't know about this...
